St. Louis Region wins Tom Burke Award (Large Regions)

The St. Louis Region SCCA was awarded the Tom Burke Award for Large regions (membership of 401-800) at the SCCA National Convention Saturday, Jan. 21
The Tom Burke Awards are presented to Regions for exemplary efforts to activate and grow the SCCA. Formerly named the Chairman’s Award prior to 1987, one award is given to the RE of a Region in each of the four Size categories from the preceding year. The awards are given in honor of SCCA member Tom Burke, whose love of SCCA and passion for what we do not only ignited in others a desire to become SCCA members, but also served as a call to engage in SCCA activities. Mr. Burke’s ambassadorial approach to prospective and current members served as a model for the spirit of the SCCA.
Said Mike Kenney, St. Louis’ Regional Executive during 2022, “The award is based on a number of factors relating to membership factors and effectiveness in providing motorsports options for their members.
“While my name as RE is noted on the award it is obviously an award to all of those in leadership positions on the BoD, program chairs and committees and our many volunteers. Glad to see our Region recognized for our efforts. Thanks to all who contributed to this award.”

How to deal with Electric Vehicles – *Important safety information*

Last year SCCA formed the Electrified Vehicle Advisory Committee (EVAC) to create unified procedures across SCCA programs for Electrified Vehicles (EVs). The committee has produced a 19-page PowerPoint of information about EVs and how to deal wih them in emergency situations. It is reproduced HERE in PDF format, recommended for anybody who may encounter EV emergercies in all of SCCA’s programs.

The nine-member committee is led by SCCA Area 4 Director Dayle Frame – an EV owner and Solo competitor – and is comprised of representatives from Road Racing, Track/Time Trials, Rally/Solo and industry experts. The first tasks the EVAC has been charged with are to create basic safety rules for EVs at SCCA events and to help guide regions and facilities when it comes to training and being equipped for EVs.

Rallyist Rich Bireta received SCCA’s highest honor, the Woolf Barnato Award for contributions to the club, on the opening day of SCCA’s virtual National Convention Jan. 21. Bireta, a member of both Kansas City and Kansas Regions, was cited not only for his many years’ involvement with the SCCA rally program but also for developing technology making rallies easier to conduct which are in use at both top-level series and in low-level regional events.

The five 2022 inductees of the SCCA Hall of Fame include Kansas City Region’s Charlie Clark and St. Louis Region’s Mark Weber. Clark’s involvement in both solo and road racing include multiple Solo National Championships and Runoffs finishes, as well as serving as event co-chair of two Solo Nationals and four terms on the SCCA Board of Directors. Weber’s resumé includes being the official photographer of several major SCCA series and hundreds of club racing events, and publication in numerous magazines and other media, as well as a competition record of more than 600 races in the EP, FP, GP and HP classes in which he would sometimes run two races in a day in the same car after a lightning engine swap.
